Boundary Commission for England

Government statement on constituency review policy

On 24 March, the Government laid a Written Ministerial Statement in Parliament, outlining their proposed approach to reviews of House of Commons constituencies, both the outstanding final report and recommendations of the four Commissions from the 2018 Review, and policy for future constituency reviews.

The statement outlines the Government’s intention to implement new primary legislation by November of this year, to: a) remove the existing requirement to take forward the recommendations of the 2018 review; and b) make some changes to the basis on which future reviews are conducted, including a restoration of 650 (currently 600) as the total number of constituencies a review must recommend, and a reduction in the frequency of general reviews from once every five years, to once every eight years.
